Greetings all.

[Warning: contains Nostalgia + a touch of Humour].

It was exactly this date in 1974 at age 17 years & 1 month / 12 days when I passed my UK Driving Test in my first car: a terminally rusty 1965 Triumph 2000 in rural SW England. I remember it well: after the Examiner nearly Failed me for being a ‘Cocky Smart Arse’ but quickly issued a ‘Pass’ when I slipped him a Fiver (£5 note). Only joking….:p

Fortunately, I’d had pre-legal-driving-age experience as a ‘Race Steward’ on my local Go-Kart track + a brief drive in a family friend’s Fiat 500 at age 11 (not on a public road of course). Ohh.. and not forgetting ‘Practice Manoeuvres’ at age 15 in a 1970s Leyland Leopard 52-seater coach. (My parents owned a Hotel in North Devon - I persuaded the visiting regular coach driver to ‘let me have a go’ in the car park outside, and he kindly agreed. Fortunately, no-one was looking or we would both have been Arrested by the Old Bill (Police) for Whaadever Driving Offences(s). Eek!

Back to my Story: Over 50 years, I calculated that I’ve owned 50 cars of various marques (7 Mercedes included) on my Life’s Journey, driven more than half a million miles in varying conditions, and only once been involved in a minor RTC (Road Traffic Collision) but through no fault of my own. Ok, a handful of minor Speeding Tickets, I’d say one every 10 years?

But here’s my point: I was also fortunate to have had an early IAM (UK Institute of Advanced Motorists) training and learned about the Value of Defensive Driving .. even if going (q.) ‘A BIT TOO QUICK!’ as a Road Traffic Police Officer said with a wry smile when he caught-up with me - then let-me-off for exceeding the speed limit (by quite a lot!) on an empty dual carriageway. Phew…!:D

My Conclusion?

50 years-on, I’ve been & still am fortunate to enjoy Fun & sometimes ‘spirited’ but SAFE driving, nowadays in my treasured Mercedes W220 S Class. And, as a former Police Associated Driver & Speed Awareness / ‘Naughty Speeders  Instructor, I always reminded my, er, ‘Clients’ that it’s not Speed alone that causes Collisions & the sometimes-tragic aftermath:eek:. It’s more about how you use Speed RESPONSIBLY, and drive within & according to the conditions / your abilities etc. Enuff said?

Happy Days, Safe Driving & thanks for reading.

Congratulations on your anniversary, you have beaten me by 7 years and 5 speeding tickets!

The police will continually harp on that "speed kills" no matter how many times a rocket goes to the moon or how many pedestrians get run over for not being fast enough to reach the other pavement ;-).

Loving the car montage...

Thanks sl500amgsport! Well.. I might look 'old' but I put it down to having lived an 'energetic & healthy' Life. My Nurse & Carer 'Samantha' agrees ... 1713734730282.png
As for 'Speed Kills' etc. I agree: there's much more to it than that ;-)

I can beat you on some of those stats!

For me, it will be 55 years, this year and I passed my test when I was 17 and 3 months. Never joined the IAM but my Dad's friend, who taught me to drive, was an IAM member, I've only had one speeding ticket (never been caught for all the other offences, officer) and “owned“ 15 cars (although four of those were company cars). Two minor RTAs and, on each occasion, I was stationary at a junction when someone hit me from behind.

I totally agree - inappropriate speed is the problem.

Coincidentally I passed my test on 21/2/74 although been on the road before that on a bike since '71 (the days when you could ride a bike on L plates indefinitely - didn't pass my bike test until '97!). Also could I borrow Samantha sometime, I've got this bad knee that needs looking at....

I passed my test on 13/12/1977 at the ripe age of 16 years and 12 days though I actually started driving (with my parents in the car) some 9 or 10 months previously.
Like you my examiner (who was a traffic police officer in NZ) told me I was overconfident and almost failed me for it.

A few of my more interesting toys (in chronological order - note these are sample images in most cases though colours are correct) 18034.jpg 5078744509_8c7d6e788a_z.jpg Ford_Capri_Mk_II_Ghia_3.0_(1977)_-_30130294141.jpg chrysler-vh-pacer-7.jpg unnamed.jpg citroen-bx-1-e1651590865527.jpg CIMG1217.jpeg mazda-xedos-6-mazda-xedos-6-2-0-v6-limousine-bleu_8239969245.jpg 101.jpg Morticia.jpg

And of course the current crop of Smart Roadster, r129, r230 and R class.

The standouts in my mind are the Valiant Pacer (supercar performance at the time in a 4 door saloon), the BX (superb ride and handling), the Xedos (silky smooth V6 that loved to be red lined) and the 101s (especially the GS for its sheer fun on and off road).
When I told the other half I'd bought the 101GS I told her I'd bought a V8, 4wd mid-engined convertible....

OMG o_O. WOT I've started here ('50+ years On the Road' etc) after your, er, 'Colourful' replies about owning & driving anything BUT a Mercedes Benz over the Decades ).

That said: it's lovely to compare notes on our various 'other' Cars over the years - of whatever marque, and in whatever circumstances.:);).

I've often thought.. a Car or similar road-going Vehicle (of any make, age or model) can represent an important period on our Life's Journey and bring back Nostalgic memories of times past - for better or worse?

Must go: my Personal Carer & Classic Mercedes Enthusiast, Samantha, has just popped-in. She says she always prefers a Long & Comfortable Ride with me in my S320 Limo compared with a Short, sharp-one in a modern 'Sports Car'.

Quick.. Nurse.. Fetch the Screens... !!! :p
