What are the 5 basic questions I should ask about 500 SECs once I know the history and MOTs?

Conrad, the first and biggest question is what does the inside of the airfilter look like. unclip the retaining clips
and use a 10mm spanner or socket to undo the centre nut and then remove the airfilter cover. You will see the
end of the breather inside the filter element. If there is
any oil or dampness there put the cover back on and walk away as quick as possible. It doesn't matter how nice the car looks or how cheap it is, if the centre of the filter housing is not completely dry don't touch it with a bargepole!
That's the only question you should ask.
Here's hoping for dryness.

Excuse my ignorance but what's the significance of oil or dampness  in the air filter?

If there is oil or oil vapour there the engine is a heavy
breather is can cost £££££'s to put right.
Quentin Wilson (Top Gear) quotes £12,000 but that is for a new engine.

Hi Conrad, something else to check is the inside of the boot, under the rear window for rot, it seems to be a problem if the window seal is not all it should be. This is also quite costly to repair!
