What do all you experts say an 88F 560SEL should return in mpg for town & m'way driving ? I'd be grateful to know.

I've just had mine serviced with Mobil 1 0W/40 & Bosch Super4 spark plugs , both of which I've used several times before in my previous 500SEC.

The other thing is what tyres would you recommend for economy ? At the moment I've got a mish mash of nonsense on all 4 tyres but then running these cars on a "budget" always does call for an initial sacrifice.

I used to run the 500 on Avon which I really liked for being soft and quiet. I used to get about 22 mpg on the m'way at anything from 80 - 90 mph. That I could live with. Is it really true that if you reduce speed to 70 - 75 mph the 560 will return the official & manufacturer's claims ?

All info glady appreciated.

My last car was a 280SE, LHD on a manual gearbox, and if you are getting 22mpg, that isnt bad!!!! The 280SE only did 22mpg....

I went up to York over the Jubilee weekend & then down to Somerset a few days later. On the second trip I managed 20 mpg out of the 560SEL compared to 22 mpg from the 500SEC on the same journey. After reading your reply I now feel a lot better !! Maybe those Bosch plugs & that Mobil 1 are worth it ? Now about those tyres .....?

seems that to mention economy and a 560 sec in the same sentence is a bit of a contradiction !!!!

Air friction is the main cause of higher fuel consumption on motorway high-speed driving. It does not have much effect below 40mph but rises rapidly, roughly as a cube law. Hence at 60 - 70 mph your fule consumption should be considerably less than at 80 mph.

I have just come back from a holiday in France in my
500SE and covered around 1500 miles.With 2 adults,
2 ankle biters and luggage the old lady averaged over
25 to the gallon. The last 550 miles were covered at an
average MPG of 28.155. That was travelling at 65-70mph
for a lot of the time but we did do 100 miles on the M20
and M25 on Sunday evening.Not bad for a 5 Litre V8 I
thought.

Hello fellow Merc brethren !!

Thanks for all the advice & stuff. In town I reckon my 560SEL returns approx. 16 mpg which isn't really that important to me because in town I happily potter around in a VW Vento.

I personally wouldn't say that mentioning economy & 560 in the same sentence is a contradiction because lesser machinery like Range Rovers, Ferraris, Rollers, Bentleys, big Volvos & Saabs, V6 engined medium sized saloons etc etc are far worse. After all the W126 S-class was the proud recipient of the MB energy efficiency concept was it not ?

The rule for the reduction in mph giving an increase in mpg makes a lot of sense. Thing is life just isn't the same at 70 as it is at 95 mph.

Finally your 500SE ( what year is it & is it W126 or 140 ? ) returning 28 mpg is ( to quote an American's  favourite word )  awesome !

I'm well impressed and a little envious but well done nevertheless !

Mercmush, sorry to be so long in coming back.Been out of town.
It's a W126 of Dec '82 vintage. Got it in January with a
just run-in 90,000 miles on the clock (genuine).
Oh,and it cost all of £850.00!
