My old 1990 560 has had an ignition probem for a long time now and have spent a few euros replacing bits that did not need replacing to try and cure a reluctant/backfire start and hessitant acceleration. I am now guessing that its the ignition module(EZL?) thats bolted to the inner wing with multiple round connections thats feeding the wrong info to the ignition system. I have replaced a similar unit on my 88 230e because you would have to tap the old unit to get it to start and its now perfect with the new one, but that was an off-on fault.
Question...Is it possible that there is a fault in the unit thats feeding incorrect info to the ignition system or is it a faulty crankshaft position sensor?
Thanks in advance
Mike

Hi - don't know how similar your V8 is to mine but recently I had similar problems isolated to MAF and to two faulty HT leads and one of the eight coil packs

Not sure Angus, but I have replaced all HT leads, plugs, rotor and cap. When you say MAF, would that be the Mass Air Flow Sensor?.

cheers

Yes, Mass Air Flow Sensor.

Had intermittent poor running over several months. Seemed especially bad on part throttle when it would hesitate, seeming to missfire a bit before jerking into the next gear. If I booted it sysmptoms would often go away. I gues the MAF's sensitivity was somehow affected and it wasn't sending clear messages to the ECU.

New MAF=loads of power back and the original clear correlation between right foot, accelration and gear changes.
