Just heard that some 654 engines have a recall for the timing chain. Not sure what the criteria is at the moment and it doesn’t seem all are affected. We recommend replacing the chain anything over 140k as we have heard a few have snapped without warning, and are replacing them as a matter of corse with any cam work undertaken.

They want to recall them for the ****** vacuum pump! I’ve heard of one that has just failed for the second time
Chatting with the tech who checked my brake servo he said they were seeing a lot go through the workshop.

Which is the 654 engine?
The 2.0d engine used in a lot of Mercedes from late 2016 - if is 200d 220d or a 300h it probably has it.
Great engine for power and economy… turning out not so great for reliability :(

I thought I read somewhere the cause of the excessive camshaft and rockers wear is too much exhaust back pressure…

Is this the same engine as the om654 used in 200, 220 and 250 version from 2009 onwards? I changed my chain and sprocket at 110k miles

How are the newer ( from 2013 model onwards ) OM651 engines doing timing chain / rocker shaft -wise? There was problems with the earlier ones, I believe?

Apart from oil and water leaks, the 651 engine just suffers from chain wear, stop start exaggerates the wear.

The stop-start I have banned in all the cars in the Family, as SOP. My 2014 220 Eclass w212 now has reached the 143'000 miles mark, full MB service to date, no mention of any chain replacement, and so far, all is going good. Hopefully, it will give the tell-tale rattle before it gives up the ghost. Is there any way to check the chain - tensioner - gear wear, in-situ? Without major stripping down? Thank Star.

Ah sorry I was wrong I was thinking of om651I thought this was the same engine.
Probably developed from the OM651… and added in some more “maintenance “ features…:shock:

I was so focused on the timing chain issue, I completely missed the water and oil leaking....can you elaborate please?
