O.K guys,
I'm not feeling complacent any longer on this subject.
My Pride & Joy is a W208 230 CLK Komp' Sport with a gearbox serial no' of
722605 0 0834958

A 5 speed electronic box with the S/W sw'. I assume this is the 722.6 box
referred to on these forums.

I expect that there is a corporate body of knowledge regarding this that I'm
ignorant of ?
How many have failed that people here are aware of and what are the symtoms please ?

Thanks,
Tim

There is a wealth of knowledge but as a starting point, what's the mileage, what are the symptoms and have you had the oil changed?
Has it been properly diagnosed?

Hi jberks,
75K miles
It seems perfect at the moment, as I anticipate changing front disc's and pad's plus possibly one two stearing ball joints that creak I was hoping to
postpone doing a ATF change for awhile.
However if there is knowledge of a high number of failures here on this forum
I may have to juggle one or two financial priorities.

Regards,
Tim

Just ****** change it mate. It is not a difficult DIY job if you can get under the car, or if you are sticking it in to get the work done it shouldn't be expensive.

There is every reason to change it and none not to. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" does NOT apply to service items like fluids.

I'd agree with Hibbo. Assuming it hasn't been done to date then 75k is plenty long enough. You could ignore it and still be going strong at 150k BUT how would you feel if you ignored it and had the box give up at 85k? £100 maintenance turning instantly into £1,000+ of work.
Consider it prudent preventative maintenance and bite the bullet.
On the other work, you really don't have much of a choice in that either but DIY or a reputable garage and it shouldn't be too painful.

As all of the above advice, and change it when you can, do bare in ming that you only hear about the ones that wrong on the forum, and there are hundreds of thousands running around with no problems

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
Teddy, theres a thread in the DIY forum that shows you how to do it.

I've just ordered a 722.6 dipstick from Ebay in the US, when it arrives I'll post the exact specifications on here. It only cost me $33, which at the current exchange rate is very good value.

Must keep an eye out for a set of Bozzio injector nozzles on US ebay...

Thanks for the feed back chaps,
My CLK is well first registered April 98 hence should have a Torque Converter
bung. If so will the complete unit drain including the integeral oil cooler in the
rad or do I drop a hose ?

I have been reading up on this issue on old threads going back to '03.
Is there a strong feeling toward using genuine MBZ consumables for this
or will gsf/euro be good enough ( dont buy a corrado bee sting aerial from
the latter for example)

Mine is the sport version with rubberised sill coating and what looks like feet
for either stands a four point lift or jack either end of the sill.
If that is the case what other jacking places are there ?

I ask as I assume procuring a W/shop Manual isnt possible ?

Thanks very much
Tim

Yours will be the same as the excellent "How To" as written by Parrot of Doom in the DIY section.
