I've looked at Malcolm's sticky list of gearboxes versus fill quantities.
(I'm constantly amazed at the amount of info and helpful people there are on this site)

My gearbox, a 722.641, is not specifically listed

Am I safe to presume that the fill quantity for my gearbox is the same as all the other 722.6xx boxes?

It probably is, but I'd like that warm & fuzzy feeling from someone saying yes.

(Someone else on the sticky thread had the same question with a 722.640...not answered)

Thanks again Malcolm, you are the supreme resource.
No drain plug?
Every time I get an answer it raises another question for me, but I'll research before I ask.
I'm guessing it means no drain plug in the torque converter....I recall as thread discussing rotating the torque converter using a screwdriver, until the torque converted drain plug came round and was accessible.....
I'll go find the thread before I ask any more

Yes the torque converter plug deleted on all at end of 1999.

Just turn the engine on for a few seconds when you have drained the sump and that will empty it if no drain plug

Thanks again.
I've found Parrot of Doom's pictures.
It's a job for a free weekend.
Need to think through what I need before I attempt it.

You will need a dip stick to check the oil

I've found a thread illustrating the dipstick (thinks....same as my gearbox?)....which I think I can bodge from a length of net curtain springy thingy. (make sure the plastic doesn't come off, and just use the measurements as per the picture) I'm more concerned about the basic stuff like a trolley jack and axle stands, plus sourcing the right filter, oil, gasket (Euro Parts?), and a torque spanner to put the pan bolts back in. Then I have to apply courage to the sticking point, instead of wimping out and waiting until service time and asking the indie to do it. I'd like to do the job, as I think the change is a bit abrupt at low revs around town, maybe a change will cure things.

You cant use that dip stick DIY as it is incorrect.

The dipstick should not touch the bottom of the box.

I will put up the correct details soon

Sorry about this, the MB dip stick does not touch the bottom there is a notch that stops it going right down as in the picture,, what you could do is to check the level with a MB dip stick and correct the level, then use the home made one and calibrate it from the oil level mark

sorry to have to disagree with the main man but my gearbox dip-stick does touch the bottom, compared it to LULUs home made dip stick the other day and it was 100% spot on, and my dip-stick is a genuine mb stick!!!!
