I was on the motorway earlier doing 70 mph exactly (72 on speedo) when I realized the car was in 5th. I knocked it back into 7th and all was fine. Now I may have been subconsciously playing with the wheel buttons, or is this one of the dreaded signs of upcoming 722.9 death? Cheers

I would sometimes have the same when I had a 2005 C320CDI some years back. The difference is mine wouldn't go up the box until??
After researching I concluded it was a temperature sensor, if that was to circulate atf to reduce temperature I don't remember.

It was warmer days it would happen, if I remember right.

Did you knock the gear selector to the left by accident , that can drop the gears . I remember driving in stop start traffic and reaching for something in the passenger footwell (knocked the gear selector by accident ) when the traffic freed up I was in first , trying to do 30mph wondering what the noise was

both mine and my fathers randomly make up new change patterns...

its relatively rare and "quite normal", clearly it shouldn't do it but the two I use, just do it sometimes
mine has fault codes now an then although not for 6 months, my fathers has never had a fault code on the gearbox but plays up much more than mine

the thought that they are just load of useless crap springs to mind....

It is an early 722.9, and I've had three possible uncommanded gear selctions, in the last 2 years. Two into neutral and this, but the first two were 10,000 miles ago. But it may also have been me doing strange things!!! Anyway, thanks guys, I'll report back if it happens again soon.
