I occasionally experience 'clunky' down changes with my 7G gearbox. It seems to happen under braking, down an incline and at relatively slow speed. It was extremely apparent (and frequent) when I was on holiday in the alps last week to the extent that my passengers commented on it.

Is this is a known problem that MB are aware of?

Just as a point of interest, though I have the tiptronic 5 speed.

Coming down the big hill into Lyme Regis with 4 restriction zones, if I come down and do not have to stop, it drives as normal with minimal braking from the box. If I have to stop at the first one, it stays locked up the whole ½ mile to the bottom, and I understand that the 7G box is much more adaptable than mine, so it sounds normal to me

The 7G autobox is known for having jerky gearshift problems. There are threads on every MB internet forum about it, so do a search for some info. There are a number of MB fixes, from circlip replacement on the valve body, valve body replacement, ECU updates and gearbox replacement. Apparently, the gearbox still isnt totally sorted as yet, even with all of the fixes.

Get yourself to a good dealer and hopefully they'll take it from there. You may need to be firm and persistent, but stay polite and hopefully MB will fix it. They know there is an issue with this autobox.
