You will have an engine coolant temperature sensor probably on the thermostat housing. This sensor will via the control system increase the amount of fuel supplied to the cylinders up until the engine reaches running temperature. Clearly there is a fault either with the sensor, the wiring or the controller which results in the controller believing that the engine is always at running temperature. Try changing the sensor as the first and cheapest actions. I would anticipate £15 from the likes of GSF (German, Swedish and French) or Eurocar Parts.

Cheers Tim
I have already replaced the temp sender which controls the magnetic clutch fan. There is another sender just behind this one , is this the one you mentioned?

I don't know without looking. Ther will be sensors for the temperature gauge, Cold Start, warm up valve and as you have stated magnetic clutch.

The sensor is likely to be a simple switch. The theory goes that if there is a single wire attached to the sensor then as the engine warms up the wire is either earthed or if it was previously earthed then as the engine warms up it is isolated. If two wires are connected to the sensor then they are either connected together or separated as the engine warms up. Place a meter set on resistance to check either from the spade connector and the cylinder head or one on each spade connectors if there are two, with the engine cold. Then warm the engine and do it again. Check to see if you are getting the same results. If they are the same then chances are that particular sensor is malfunctioning.

To be absolutely sure you can bypass the sensor to simulate the process of the engine warming up and see if the performance improves. Do not do this for long as the vehicle will consume excessive amounts of fuel and start to run badly.

Do check that the coolant is topped up and bleed. If not the sensors may not be submersed in water and may be giving a false reading or no reading.

Cheers Tim,
I know exactly what you are saying, will give it a go in the next day or so. I was reading through a few posts from people with thier ABS light staying on (as mine is)and got replys that their OVP relay fuse was blown resulting in poor start ups and no ABS obviously. I had a look for this relay but couldnt find it. I know what it looks like as my 560SEC has one on the firewall. Does my 230 have one?
