early is better than late

won't do harm changing it early - may well be a great idea

Totally agree, changed my 7G at 40K and the waste was crystal clear. The mechanic showed me a case bottom from another and it was really filthy.
Got to be better to have squeaky clean oil than really mucky stuff. All MB care about is that it fails after their warranty expires!

The Indy in Welwyn do a great job. They do not just drain it off but take off the bottom plate and thoroughly clean it.
Mine was actually really clean , but they showed me another and there was crap and gunk in a myriad of indentations. Man it was seriously filthy.

IMO 75K is way too long … didnt MB at one stage say Gearboxes were sealed for life?
40K defo max for me … but then maybe I am OCD.

on the 7g it was sealed for life then changed their mind to one off at 37k miles - which I think then moved to every 37k miles

I asked should I get mine done (about 8 years and 42k miles at the time) - bloke said yes !!!, oh I said what will it be like, he replied if its that old, horrible burnt black tar - he was right except for the iron filings - it seems these things were built to self destruct and sealed for life was expected to get it over 5 years out of their hair where it can soon die quickly...

and the nasty thing is everyone else has just copied this approach and speeded it up so 4 years is too long for most brands nowadays - lease it dump it - dead planet anybody ?

thats really interesting, because the oil in mine was very clean at nearly 40K and so was the bottom tray. Definitely no gunk, black tar or metal filings. OK the oil didnt look brand new … but very close to it.
Thats when he showed me another one they were doing, and the oil in that tray was seriously filthy. Looked like it had done a hell of a lot of miles.
It looked like maybe someone had changed mine before (but not according to service record or the bills with the car). Likewise my differential oil was really clean. ( only changed cos I am OCD i.e. like I changed my ABC fluid and filter).
Do you think the difference is due to driving style? I.e. my previous owner was a bit like me, long gentle warm ups and generally lazy driving with the big old V8 lump just ticking over nicely and of course the odd spirited drive.?

BMW bikes tried the same with their final drives, until they caught fire or seized up.

I would expect someone had changed it previously - honestly these boxes do like to destroy themselves - if you have the V12 its basically a gearbox rebuild every 3 years - Alex at AMF took a look at my box adaptions when it was on about 60k and he thought it looked quite healthy.

My previous trusted garage (RIP Ian), always used the term "Sealed for Warranty"
