Noise is normally heard on acceleration and it sounds like a clacking noise or something hitting under the bottom of car in the trunk area. The noise comes and goes (sometimes in the same day) and it is louder when car is loaded or when I make a right turn. Once car gets up to 35-40 mph noise goes away, but reappears when accelerating from a standstill. Noise has disappeared for 2-3 months only to reappear. Any ideals?

The normal way to deal with this sort of thing is to thump around with your hand under the back, anti roll bar, exhaust suspension bits and etc, try and check without jacking, otherwise it may not show up.

Hi supercooper188

I had a similar experience with a previous car, not my MB, and I finally identified the problem as a broken exhaust bracket. It didn't look broken with the car stationary.

The problem manifest under acceleration and in my car the engine visibly rotated in the engine compartment when the accelerator was blipped, only a degree or two, but it was enough to twist the whole of the exhaust system out of position due to the broken bracket, causing the exhaust to contact the floor pan when undertaking certain manoeuvres.

Like Malcolm says, you need someone to bounce the car while you look underneath. Failing that, if you can put the car on a hoist or over a pit you should quickly locate the problem.

Getting someone to sit inside the car during the bounce test should help emulate road conditions without actually moving.

REGARDS Phil

Definitely exhaust bracket. There was another post about this, same problem, same model. The engine moves slightly on the mountings when you power on or off, causes exhaust to move slightly. This is why the mounting is flexible rubber. But it wears or breaks and only the pipe is holding it together until it breaks. The support should be replaced and if the support lug on the exhaust is broken a good handyman/indy will be able to make a repair without needing to replace the whole thing. It may be worth checking engine mountings too just in case.
