I have a 1994 C280, and I'm having what appears to be massive electrical failures on a grand scale.

About 4 years ago the trunk was flooded (thanks to a leak in the seal, and the drain being clogged with paper). Everything was soaked, completely. Since then, the airbag light will not go off, the car has lots of trouble starting, the feature that rolls up the windows when locking the car from outside has ceased. After about a year of just ignoring all this, the real problems occurred. I was in the trunk investigating, when I found this really important looking relay mounted next to the battery. Turns out, it's the convenience relay, and it was covered in corrossion and bits from the flooding. The windows worked at this point... I disconnected all cables from the wiring harness and took the part out of the car. I removed the cover and cleaned it completely with electronics parts cleaner, as it looked like it really needed it. Then, I re-inserted all of the wiring and put it back together. Now, my windows will roll down, but will not roll back up unless I bang on this relay while someone else holds the switch. I've tried removing the wiring and using di-electric connector protector which helped none. Now, the front windows will not move at all. The rears continue to go down, but not up. Shortly after this, my windshield washer quit spraying. Not to mention sometimes the delay on the wiper works, sometimes it doesn't.

If perhaps ANYONE could have any idea what to do about all this, without saying "replace car," I'd be very much obliged!

First of all, personally I would replace the relay, then check all of the negative (12 volt - ) connections, when a negative is corroded you get all sorts of problems with indicators coming on with brake lights etc., also check your bulbs, I recently had a blown brake light bulb and every time I applied the brakes the dash board lights lit up ! If you have a lot of faults it will probably be a negative connection or a multi pin plug connector corroded, take it one a time. Regarding your windows I read on a forum that if you disconnect the battery you have to re programme the windows in a certain sequence.

I've replaced the battery and done other minor repairs in the past (back when the windows worked) and never had to reprogramme the windows. Only when I disconnected the comfort control relay did they die.

But thanks for the info, I'll deffinitely start looking...

I concur with Mr Fridge, the obvious (on the face of it) first step would be to replace the relay, it would appear that 'all road' lead back to this being suspect.

The Negative connections being suspect is also a likely cause and these are commonly referred to as 'earth faults'. Basically when the negative is corroded (as more than likely in your case) or broken then a high resistance (HR) connection results. The current flowing in the circuit therefore has no where to flow (due to the HR)to and 'looks' for a path of least resistance, which is in cars is typically via a piece of other equipment connected to the circuit via its negative. This is what causes the odd results you can see when, for example, you go to operate an electric window and the indicator glows. The window negative is broken and when the window is activated the current needs to flow so it takes the path of the indicator circuit which in the case of an earth fault in this example is the path of least resistance. Hope this helps in your understanding of what to look for.
