This could be co-incidence, but when changing the coolant in my car, I managed to break a vac hose that runs from the inlet manifold, to a component mounted under the black plastic cover on the front of the engine. I found the heat had hardened it, and the hose fractured when I tried to move it aside to get a socket on the thermostat cover.....

I'm assuming that my bodge on the hose using a straw from a can of WD40 and some heat shrink tubing has not worked and is restricting the vacuum to the mystery component. Does this component affect the timing of the engine by any chance?

Idle is pulsing now and the car stalls on a trialing throttle when pulling up to a junction for instance. I need to get a replacement for this va line, any idea of the part nbumber as I cannot seem to locate it!

On the left of the pic below, is the mystery component the broken hose enters, the black plastic cover is removed for clarity:

Its a bodge Jim, but not as we know it...:

The other end of the hose disappears under the intake manifold and connects here:

Your help is appreciated. Part number for the hose would be great! As would an alternative source for same size and bore of hose.....

I assume the pipe will just slip over the connectors on each end without the elbows then? Great tips, thanks.

Solved!

Problem has now been resolved. Not a long term solution, but the car is idling as it should and does not stall or misfire at high RPM now.

I got my hands on some rubber hosing that was a good fit over the rubber boots for the vacuum connections to the inlet manifold and the component mounted on the timing chain cover. I used some meaty zip ties as I did not have jubilee clips the right size, to make sure the hose was a leak free fit. The pipe was routed out of the way of the heat, i.e. not over the water pump and thermostat housing, and tie wrapped to secure.

The car now drives even better than previously, leading me to believe there must have been a leak in the line somewhere before I managed to break it...... As soon as I get the correct hose, I'll be fitting it. BTW, the hose that MB use is the same as the hose used to operate pneumatic adjustment of the seats in trucks and tractors. I have a source for this locally now, and as soon as I get the part number and price, I'll post it up.

Thanks for all the advice, E320 owners beware of that pesky vacuum line!

Jizzster, this is verging on SPAM. Please stop? BTW, you want to drop MSN as your host, it is a PITA to sign up to. I had a quick look at the site, but it offers a very narrow band of knowledge compared to this forum and the MBclubUK. Good luck with developing the site though, the more the merrier.
