Perhaps someone can help me. I have a 94 E320, runs great but sputters at 3000 RPM. New wiring harness, new MAF, new Throttle Body, recent tune up, etc. I also replaced the ECU with one purchased on Ebay. New CAT convertor.

This is driving me insane

May only have one pump on later models like mine.

Question however is this. Are you talking about the splutter whilst in neutral or when driving the car ????????

Also do you know you can get the codes read from the diagnostic plug .

Do you have a Mercedes specialist near you that is familiar with the older cars ?

Where you based ?

Is 3000 rpm the kind of revs when the variable cam timing kicks in? Just a thought

The camshaft adjuster is tested at at 2K rpm and should be off at 2K so 3K could well be the range when it cuts in

3000 rpm sputter

Car hesitates or sputters at 3000 rpm when driving. I am in Southern California, Huntington Beach. Have had it Benz repair shop, he has all the latest code readers, etc. So I'm trying to get some ideas before I take it back. The car has a beautiful interior & exterior, all new suspension parts, just perfect ,,,except for this crazy demon which will not allow me to exceed 3000 rpm !!!

It runs perfect up to and under 3000. So if I drive it gently, no problem. But who drives gently all the time ?

Is your speed limiter set if you have cruise control or set the maximum allowable speed?

car has cruise control. It works fine, this past weekend I drove to Las Vegas and set it at 75 mph. I was just under 3000 rpms and the car ran like new, but if I tried to ease up to 80 mpg, the bucking and stumbling occured. So I just kept it at 75 miles per hour.

Once you've removed fuel feed problems as a possible cause I would say it's ignition-related and could be a coil pack, engine bay wiring loom, or the part of the loom feeding the coil packs. Or the ECU. You've changed the loom and the ECU so that (probably) removed them from the equation

What do the plugs look like? When were they last changed? Does the engine misfire at 3k in the workshop? Does it misfire on one cylinder or more than one? Have you compression-tested the engine? Have you checked the fuel pressure in the rail when it misfires?

All the high-tech gear in the world is not going to solve this one - you'll need an old-school auto mechanic to track it down

Are you saying that tech has plugged it into diagnostic machine and there are no fault codes ??

If the car is in limp home mode, I would have expected fault codes to be read.

Does the MIL light up ???

If this was the case Kieth then it could well be a fuel problem and this would not show up on a diagnosis check

Just a thought, not sure if the ecu is coded to the chassis, was it a new one or secondhand, it might need coding to chassis, i think i have come across this before when i swopped from a car i was breaking to test something.
