95 C200 Sport belt tensioner problem?.

Hi all
a friend of mine just bought the above mentioned car today. The previous owner said that the car is noisey when started from cold and put it down to a faulty belt tensioner, a type of damper he said. I suggested tappets or cam chain tensioner but he said no it was the belt tensioner and that it was a common failure in these cars.
Anyone experience anything similar?

There is indeed a belt tensioner damper on most MB's that can, when worn cause a horrible mettalic rattling noise at low revs.

About £35 for the part and prolly the best part of an hours labour to replace.

When I was having my gearbox oil changed, the mechanic said my poly belt tensioner is on its way. said my engine should be abit quieter than it is.
I asked him how much they are, He said he'd have to price one, but said about £120. Not sure how much Labour is involved. I presume £120ish was just for the part.
There's about 4 pulleys the Ploy V Belt goes around, on the front of the engine, i think its one of these.
I've decided to leave mine for now, see how it goes or if it gets mentioned on the service.

The tensioner for the C250TD is about £20, I think the petrol ones are slightly different but are a similar price. Very easy to fit, hour at the most.
