On my W210 E300 the outside temp. sensor was disconnected when the front bumper was taken off for repair. However the symptom was a constant reading on the gauge of -38C (the lowest possible, the default setting I presume). We reconnected the sensor - it just plugs back in behind the nearside driving lamp - and the gauge instantly went back to normal. I don't know if the C class is set up the same way but if so, it could be worth checking that the sensor is properly connected, connections free of dirt, &c &c?
Did it ever work? the screen was fitted to all later cars , you had to fit a sensor lead and a bulb and then activate it with the dealers star machine, or it could just be the bulb on yours if it worked before
in 96 the temp display would have been an option (an expensive one as well), if the space where it lives is black then it's probably not fitted. you can retrofit them but I could think of better ways of spending about £300 on my car
I'm not sure if the guage ever worked, as I just bought the car 3 weeks ago. However, the handbook does show it as a feature (although I appreciate this might be optional). The display doesn't look blanked off, as - when the ignition is switched off - it has exactly the same look/texture as the functioning mileometer and trip counter. I'd have expected to be able to spot if it was blanked off with a bit of black plastic or whatever.
But I'll check for disconnected connections, or maybe MB do a fab job of blanking off their unused ancillaries!
