hi this is my first post so here goes.
i have one sickly 96 c200, it's only firing on 2 cylinders, i've put a new coil pack on 2+3 and it started on all 4, then a 100yds down the road back on 2, so my friend put his scanner on it and it said ammperage not found.
we then tested for continuity from the coil pack to the ecu, all ok, then he put a pulse test on the pulse output for 2+3, no pulse, he then tested 1+4 and got a good pulse, so this is pointing to the ecu or is it?
any advise would be most welcome.
the other thing is i need the name of a reputable firm that can test my ecu honestly and then rebuild it for me at a fair price if need be, i've heard of so many ripoff merchants about it's hard to know who to trust.
there is one firm i've heard of on here called ECU CLINIC but that was a 2006 post.

your's hopefully........Pete

hi jib how come a faulty harness causes no pulse directly at the ecu.
could a coil pack thats gone bad not cause the ecu to blow?

thanks........Pete

Hello,

Is your ecu under the washer bottle? If it is then it has a pms engine controller, is quite common for these controllers to go faulty and shut off two cylinder. i.e no pluse to one of the coils. Hope this helps a bit

Good Luck

+1, the engine loom is usually ok on 4 cyl cars, never changed one yet,

I thought that too, though I've had a report that the loom on my old beloved C220 (1995) has gone, possibly wiping out the ECU as it went.
Not sure of the truth as it now lives somewhere in Eastern Europe and isn't mine any more.

remove the two large plugs from the pms ecu & look for any trace of water damage on the ends of the pins slight rusty brown if so try a good clean but prob needs looked at the w124 e200 suffer the same fate it tends to be the siemens ones that give the most probs..

BBA-REMAN do rebuilt exchange ecu's but they are pricey - £475. Price of new -£900. Quality firm though. If you do change the ecu then also replace the coils, plugs and leads with original equipment as any of these items if faulty can take out the ignition driver stages of the ecu.

hi all thanks for all the help.
i got offered to me today an ecu off a damaged c200, the guy said it should work but i dissagreed with him, he said try it there's nothing lost so i did and hey presto it worked.
so much for all the dealers and ecu repairers saying it's chipped.
what do you all think?
anyway after eating some very nasty tasting humble pie and £55 all is well.
thanks again to all that replied.

Early C class 202's were not coded, until the introduction of the electronic key, once the plastic electronic key was introduced, it made second hand ECU's U/S, as each ECU was unique, and could,nt be recoded, though if you were to source the key, EIS switch and possibly other components as well from the donor car the ECU could be re-used.

Might be a wild card but mine started running on two cylinders and it was the head gasket .
