97 C180 whine

Hi guys, I have a serious whine from my 97 C180.Got car up and running on axle stands-seems prop will move a fair amount,bearings dont seem any play,even lying underneath with car in 4th gear at 2000 revs-still cant say for certain where noise comes from. Any thoughts/prompts/ideas please??

If it whines when pulling and quiet on the over run, then the pinion bearings have gone in the diff

Have a look at post #32 HERE this doesn’t fit in with your whine noise but will put you in the picture re the prop shaft. I changed the center bearing and its rubber support, there was no whine associated with the problem, more of a thud when taking off. Others may know more.

c180 whine

the whine is there from the off and seems to get quiter above legal limit only.
I towed a 4x4 a week or so ago-it seems since then??? tks again
