hi everyone, hope my experience today helps you if your car starts jerking and surging, autobox irratic operation. local diagnocis was autobox "limp home mode". due to high mileage 190k miles, thought it was time for a new autobox. agreed a good price for a 50k miles car £900 fitted, with 3 months full guarantee at dronsfields oldham. was waiting until after xmas break. meanwhile the driveability got so bad you could not drive the car, 20 mph max. so one of the postings said disconnect the MAF and see what happens, i had allready fully cleaned the MAF the previous day following malcolm's ( televisionman's ) excel. article. so tried disconnecting it, fantastic recovery, certainly the autobox returned to normal and the car ran well, just slightly down on power. local merc. main dealer £250 for new MAF. so contacted dronsfields at oldham. MAF £65. they fitted the new MAF but this did not resolve the problem. they said further invest, req, into the electrics, after xmas. they also felt the car was well down on power, they said using car without MAF is not detrimental. just a point i noticed, the elect.plugthat plugs into the MAF's socket has four female contacts, but the socket on the MAF has five contacts ? this may not mean anything.i have cancelled the autobox and i am confident dronsfields will resolve problem. they fed and watered me and i met the owner, melvin dronsfield, he said 300k miles from a looked after autobox was quite possible, change oil and filter every 40k miles.thanks once more to the person who posted the MAF info.looks like you saved me some money.herbiemercman.

I have answered in your other post.

If it runs OK with it unplugged, then the one that they fitted must be an old one or faulty

hi malcolm, that would be my opinion as it is logical. it was new and in a box, i had marked my old one with tipex prior to stripping and cleaning. it must be the wrong type, they have so many cars like mine running well that next time they can borrow the MAF and see what happens. they are so experienced and knowlegable that there just must be more to it. in the canteen/ waiting room there was people from far and wide that spoke so highly of the expertise and low costs. all the parts and info i have had has been vg. i will let you know what happens after the xmas break. herbimercman. The price for the MAF from Bosch is £147 It the MAF is wrong or out of spec the engine power will be down, the box will do odd things as it does not know what to do, if for instance you are going uphill, the box will not know what gear to use, the affect of low power also would mean that the engine would struggle as well
