hi everyone, i traced a high frequency rattle to the top fixing boss on the front of engine damper, i removed the top 8 mm set screw and found play in the retaining bush. the problem i encountered was trying to remove the lower 6mm retaining set screw, as some of you will know, it fouls the featherin fan drive pulley. the question i have is do you need to remove the featherin impellor and then the pulley ? and how do you remove the plastic fan blades from the steel pulley? surely the radiator does not need removing, i say this as the gap is only 2 inches from the fan blades to the radiator fins. many thanks. herbiemercman.

Yes, it's not a straight forward job!

On my W124, I removed the viscous fan hub by undoing the allen bolt in the centre - you might want to jam the water pump pulley from the back, there's a hole which you can put a rod in to lock against the water pump body.

With the viscous fan hub and fan out of the way, remove the tensioner complete using a 17mm hex key - there might be a plastic cap over the pivot bolt.

Theres a 7/8mm hex in the centre of the fan, you'll need a very short tool to get in there tho,the plastic fan does seperate from the viscous with 3 5mm hex.

Though the above post have told you what to do,I can give you a how to print out, though you will have to improvise owing to the special tools the dealers use

The short hex socket needed to undo the fan and the locking tool for the pulley.

You can use a standard allen key and a length of pipe for the viscous fan hub, and the water pump can be locked by a length of metal rod - I simply use another allen key (5mm IIRC). There's definitely no need for "special" tools.

I can remove mine without removing the fan pulley. I just hold the washer with grips and turn the bolt. It rubs slightly on the edge of the pulley but causes no damage.
