97 E300D auto box

I am experiencing a minor problem with the autobox in that i cant get it out of park all other selections are perfect in order to get it out of park i am having to remove the gear surround fasci and the insert a screwdriver to lift & separate a linkage on the right hand side .... I feel it is something simple lke a worn spring perhaps can anyone advise

You are pressing the brake pedal while trying to shift out of park, aren't you?

Might be a faulty brake light switch, check if the brake lights work. Otherwise it's probably a failed solenoid (connected to the linkage you mentioned)

Its quite a complicated set up linked to the key, I do have pictures but my computor this evening refuses to show active content. It will take to long to open 3000 pictures.
