I have a 97 C200 Elegance, and have to replace the nearside sidelight bulb on a regular basis.

Does anyone know what causes this? And is it difficult to fix?

There could be a number of reasons. One of those is vibration. Is the headlight assembly secured properly at all fastening points? There is a tricky plastick plug which acts as a fastening point at the front next to the bonnet

I had a similar problem on my CLK for months, this might not apply to you but you can give ita shot :

There is a inline current limiting resistor on mine that had failed - it was between the lamp holder and the cable entry into the sealed unit. I did some rough calculations and figured I needed between 3 and 4 ohms to maintatin 12Vs at max driving voltage - 13.5 - 14V. The dealers or indies couldn't find the fault and attributed it to bulbs, bulb holders etc. It was a crafty one.
