Hi all
Recently got myself a 98 clk320 sport. Over the weekend opened her up on a clear road and things seemed good got to about 95 MPH and then engine seemed to lose power and missfired.Backed off and power was back and running fine. acceleration upto this speed was great but just didnt want to go any more. Can anyone give me a few pointers what this could be. many thanks.

To me it sounds like lack of fuel. With the electrics if there was a problem here the fault would show up when accelerating and the demand on extra fuel is only for a short time.
I would change the fuel filter first,if this did not improve things then check the output from the pump. If there car can accelerate through the gears at near max revs it would prove the point.

these do suffer from MAF SENSORS and can cause missfires we had one in our garage it would cruise at 100 mph but kept recording missfires in ecu changed MAF SENSOR drove like a different car (fantastic) you need to have it checked before you go out & buy one. cheers ronnie

Welcome Ronnie1 to the forum,Always good to have a garage man here. :D yes as you say the MAF is the prime suspect, I must have been sleeping on my first answer

Get one from a Bosch service center around £58 compared with £250 from MB and fit it into your own plastic housing

Bosch should have the number in their book, you do have a number on your existing filter, I see that Pierburg also supply some models

There are 3 types of sensors, not easy to test with cold checks, the wire versions do erode away and fall out of spec, other types are of the encapsulated type.
It is said that when the MAF is bad enough to put the car into the limp home mode,if by unplugging it the car runs better, then it is faulty, even having the codes read does not always give an exact answer as other components deviate from their stored settings to compensate
