Does the 98' E200 have a factory immobilizer ?

If the Immobilizer prevented the car from starting would the engine turn but not fire or would it not turn at all ?

When switching on the ignition I hear the fuel pump buzz for a couple of seconds. Would it do that if the car was 'immobilized' ?

Around a year ago I had water in the Central Locking pump. Alarm going off etc. Managed to fix it but I never trusted the alarm. Would a re-occuring problem in that area cause the immobilizer to prevent the car from starting ?

AM I looking at an immobilizer problem or a crank position sensor ?

The car drove perfectly till I parked it up last night. This morning it cranks on the key but just won't fire.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Ian

You can test the crankshaft sensor with an ohmmeter should be near enough 1KΩ if bad it will read will read very high up to 99kΩ

Thanks, TV,

I see a cable going down to something attached to the rear of the engine (on the driver's side). The cable is clipped to the bodywork inside the engine bay and at that point there's a cable connector.

Is that the Crank Sensor or is it on the other side of the engine ? Do I test at that connector (if that's the sensor) or do I have to remove the sensor in order to test it ?

Thanks TV.

Dark outside now - I'll take a look in the morning.

Any thing else which could prevent the car starting that I can check ?

Don't be afraid to use technical/mechanical terms - I've been 'fixin' cars for 30years, just this one has been so reliable that I've hardly had to lift the bonnet in the 8 years I've had it so, now that I actually have a problem, I don't know where anything is. d'oh!

I think that the sensor is the first and easiest test, if not that we can take a look at the ignition circuits

Thank you. I'll check the crank sensor and then come back and post the result.

I replaced the battery around 6 months ago. Never had charging problems.

The starter motor is turning the engine over at the normal cranking speed so I'm sure the battery is fine.

Measured the crank sensor at 1.2k so I guess that's ok then.

Can't see any maker's name such as Bosch etc but there's 2 ignition coils under a plate on top of the engine.

It could possibly be an immobiliser issue. When my key fob batteries run low I can unlock mine but the engine just turns over without firing. I've been told that this is a common problem with the immobiliser/key.

Try another key and see if there's a difference.

I have two keys. I ordered one of them new from the dealer just a few months ago so I don't think it's a key problem.
