This sounds like the conductor plate gone, and well known fault,,not so expensive to fix,,and you can get a good indie to do it for you. Do you have one nearbye

This happened to me in my 2001 cdi E class. I presume the gearboxes work the same and it was the electrics pack within the gearbox....

seems i might of found the problem. the metal pipe that goes from the oil cooler underneath the radiator has corroded and is leaking. ive purchased a new pipe and will refill the oil.

do you think this could of caused the poblem? i was just thinking it wouldnt be pressurising?

Thats good news,,if your car was built after 09-99 then it will not have a drain plug or dip stick but you can make one as in Parrots DIY post

Had to edit the correct statement. All 722.6 gearboxes do not have a dipstick as far as i know.

Thanks 230K, that is correct about the drain plug and I have edited. I understood that the dip sticks went at the same time,, The 722.6 box came in 1996 in volume does not anyone have a dip stick on these boxes from 1996

so would a leak in the pipe cause it to lose pressure and not change gear?

Thank you again 230K then I will take that none have them as you said,, funny how one can get a mental block on some things, even though they have been discussed so many times

Hi

It is likely that it could cause your problems. How much oil did it lose? Fill with genuine MB automatic oil only is my advice.
A dipstick will cost you nearly £30 or so. An independent MB service man will dip it for you for a small fee or you could make a dipstick as shown on various threads on here. Do a search for dipstick.

Check out this: http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=36250&highlight=auto+dipstick

and this: http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=24754&highlight=dipstick

Hope this helps

The question that you ask Rob is not easy,, the fluid leaves the torque converter and goes through the cooler, and the repeats,,I would imagine that the fluid did become too low to circulate .

The first question that you were asked was "have you checked the level"

yes and it was extremely low hence my thoughts that could of caused it, although i have put in 2 litres but it still stays in 2nd, probally leaked out now though.

thanks for everyones help

Hi

If it is leaking that quick i would guess/hope that low fluid level is causing the problem.
