Hi,

My first post on here as i am looking for some advice on a problem that i might have with my A Class (99).

I mechanic has had a look at our car and has advised us to get rid as quickly as possible.

Firstly the Chasis is starting to rust, Is this a common problem?

and more seriously, he noticed that that the inside part of the tyre of the passenger side had worn dangerously thin, the last quarter inch of the tyre width is tread bare. The tyre is only 4 months old!

This is the second tyre that we have to put on this side, the first had a blow out again due unven wear.

He has summerised that it may have been involved in an accident that has bent something.

The wheel on looking at appeared to be angled from top to bottom. Maybe due to the uneven wear?

So i have fitted to the new spare tyre but on applying the breaking there is a noise that has appears to come from the tyre/ breaks.

This happened when the last tyre was fitted but also new brakes, not having a great car knowledge i just thought i was the breaks bedding in but disspeared after 2 weeks.

Ive had the car 8months and on reading have found they have had problems with steering assembly and suspension.

Do some of these problems sound familar? Any advice greatfully recieved, expected cost of repairs ( If any) or do i take the guys advice as part ex it in and start again.

Also there is sometimes a knocking noise, when the wheels are turned, reading other threads its sounds like the steering coloum needs replacing?

As soon as the knocking noise is heard does it need replacing ASAP? and what is the expected cost?
thanks

Sounds like the rust could be something to do with a poor accident repair, the knocking sounds like a CV joint has broken, extream tyre wear would indicate the the front end is out of alignment, have you had the tracking checked??? with ethe front wheels in the straight position measure the gap between the tyre and wheel arches front and back. If there is a huge difference then its down to poor repairs. I would also check the corrosion underneath hasnt allowed anything to detach like bottom wise bone to chassis etc.

The a-class which you have suffer with a few common problems. The uneven tyre wear is normally due to either worn rear arms or subframe bushes. Not to hard to fix.

The steering knocking is unlikely to be driveshafts but more likely to be the column. I must have fitted 30 colums on a-classes before. Its around 3 hours labour so not to much trouble.

The chaissis rust is all to common but it can be treated.
