first post here.. my wifes A Class has developed a fault which means when steering the steering wheel appears to 'stick' - will turn but not smoothly there is also a slight knock from the steering column as it turns. Its an A Class Sept 2001, 1400, and done 60k. This happened approx 4 months ago and the garage we used could not find the fault (none mercedes garage tho) - the fault disappeared but has now come back again.... any advice appreciated, thanks

The rubber boot that covers the UJ that goes into the column fills with water and seizes.

Remove the boot and have a look for evidence of water ingress.

Ages ago there was a re-call on the PS pump (electric).

The knocking column is normal for the A-class. Expect to pay £500 plus to replace at a dealer

Have your steering gear be checked. It may have been broken that is why there is a clash on the gear,it maybe the knock that you heard. But somehow there are no problem in other parts like your Mercedes Benz control arm the tie rod and other parts.
