Im looking to buy a new A class and have been offered substantial discount from 2 or 3 dealerships if I buy diesel rather than petrol. I have never had a Mercedes disel before and wondered what experience anyone else has had, should I buy or go for the petrol? I heard a B class which seemed very clattery for a new car! Any advise or opinions glady received. Thanks

Nick

I bought my wife the petrol, drove the diesel and it was loud and did not seem very smooth. We went for the A150, very quiet, smooth and decent economy in town and motorway.

Also have A150 SE petrol - and agree it is very smooth and quiet. I think when fuel was rocketing last year there was a bit of a rush into diesel because of better mpg and MB probably rushed into producing more diesels as a result - and these are the ones they are now trying to shift.

i do v modest annual mileage so fuel costs not such an issue. BTW - try to get one with folding mirrors - the base model's, amazingly, don't!

I have a '07 A160 which does sound like a tractor from cold. Once on the move it is absolutely fine and once warmed up settles down a little at idle. I have driven petrol A150's (and B 150's) which are undeniably quieter - but I enjoy my diesel A Class and would have no hesitation buying another.

Have you had an A Class before? If not, check out the thorough posts here by Hawk20 as he's had two and is very knowledgeable about them.

Incidentally, real life consumption figures for my A160 CVT are a regular 44mpg and a maximum of 58mpg on the motorway. Backwards and forwards to work on a 44 mile round trip of country roads, A roads and motorway see's a tad under or a tad over 50mpg each time with ease.

I'd be interested in knowing the approximate size of your discounts off a new one if you didn't mind revealing that information - perhaps by pm?

Good luck with your decision.

Afternoon Nick :D

I drive an A200 CDI. She is the first diesel car I have owned in the years I have been driving and I was surprised at how quiet compared to many diesels she is. She was a little louder when we had the cold weather recently but nothing too noticeable. The pick up is excellent and there is lots of power when the turbo kicks in

Mine isn't a base model, and I do a 70mile round trip commute daily on A roads, my mpg figures average between 46 - 50.

I have driven an A150 petrol as a courtesy car, which as Chris noted is quieter but as I do so many miles a week the diesel option was a better choice personally. I get great pleasure in driving my car and would not hesitate in buying another on the same spec.

Good luck in your A class quest :D
