Crank sensor failure usually happens when the engine is hot---- heat is conducted to the sensor-it expands and an internal connection is broken=failure. After the engine block cools -so does the sensor---- electrical contact is renewed and the sensor works again. Eventually total failure will probably occur which is easier to diagnose. If the fault occurs when the engine heats up and disappears when it cools down it may well be the CP sensor as you thought.
