A-Class Faulty Wiper Switch?

Hi folks, first post on this forum, so hello to you!

My wife's 2006 200CDI A-class has developed a problem with the front wipers not working. I believe it's related to the indicator/wiper selection lever as when we indicate left and hold the lever down the selected action starts working.

i.e. If in setting 1 (auto rain sensor), setting 2 (normal wipe), setting 3 (fast wipe), the action selected starts working when the lever is held fully down.

Thus, I assume it's a fauly connection.

Anybody able to offer me any advice, or is it a case of me having to take it into my local dealer?

Many Thanks,
Jonnie

So sorry that you did not get a reply, and welcome to the forum.

Yes the stalk is a known fault and can be replaced,,would you try yourself if you had the instructions or have it done

Instructions to do this myself would be fantastic please? Although another user suggested there is a recall on this defect?

Cant help with the recall either but you would be wise to establish for sure about any recall otherwise if you work on it yourself, Mercedes might say you broke it… just a thought.

Hi, my email address is now on profile (jonstokes at yahoo dot com)

I've spoken to my dealer and they can't find any recall on this problem, and as the vehicle is out of warranty (ran out in May this year) they said it's unlikely Mercedes will contribute to the repair. :(

I guess I'd like to have a go at this fix myself, as they're quoting around £200 to fix including parts and labour.

There is no recall as far as I know for the combination switch, it has been modified though as the wiring harness breaks down until a wire(s) snap causing the issue. Where ever you have it replaced, you must have the steering wheel bolt changed as well.

Job takes about an hour plus the switch to give you an idea of cost. I WONT be quoting on here again having learnt the hard way and giving away my expertise, but £200 is a little expensive.

Hope you get this fixed.

You may be right S/U. Nothing is different up here mate but with all the recalls and modifications Mercedes have covering all the models, on the whole its not always easy to recall them straight away after a long day at work.

I have sent you the steering wheel and air bag removal.

You will need a 2" long torx 30 for the air bag.

Do not turn on the ignition with the air bag off

Disconnect the battery, even without having the key in, it can throw up a SRS warning!!!

Help with wiper problem

Hi, I have bought a mercedes a class 2005 recently and it has the same problem with the wiper, it will only function when I push the lever down or when the left-turn signal light is turn on, may I know how could go about sorting this problem? Could u recommend any good mercedes specialist around Manchester?

Thank you so much.

Best regards,

Hi, realise this is an old thread being resurrected but hoping someone can help maybe confirm my problem. I'm a bit wary, being female, of going to a garage as I am totally clueless when it comes to cars. My problem seems to be the front wipers alone not working, none any of the other workarounds such as pushing on the stalk seems to work either.
I've just had it serviced and MOT'ed with no problem and the wipers went through fine. 3 days later, on a trip to Thorpe Park going along the M25 the heavens open and no wipers. My first reaction was it must have happened at the garage during the MOT and service but I'm pretty positive it wasn't now having read this thread, maybe a case of bad timing.
Any advice on the best way to determine the fault would be greatly welcome.

Brought the car back to the place that did the MOT and service who went over it thoroughly (MOT and service station) , checking fuses and other bits for well over an hour, but came up blank but did say it could be this recall.

Any recommendations on a good garage around Ruislip would be welcome as well.
