can anyone help,i own a 51 plate a140 petrol avantgarde, and the fuel economy seems to be really poor.I only seem to be getting 270-280 miles to a tank, costing 40.00 to fill.I replaced the plugs with platinum ones, the car seems to run ok,its done 68000,but the range isn't good.it's a semi auto box?

Hello,

The wife can regularly get over 40 mpg in her A210 Lwb I'm impressed with that for the engine.

Maybe the 140 has to work harder? however £40 to fill = roughly 40 litres or 8.8 gallons

280 miles / 8.8 = 31.8mpg

What sort of driving is this? short journeys, traffic etc? depending on journey it doesn't sound too bad?

the fuel economy is basically the same when i'm doing short runs or long motorway journeys, its only slightly different, only had the car 5 months, bought it from merc benz garage and they say they can check by computer but i will have to pay,as it ain't covered by the waranty

Its probably about right. A quick google threw up this
http://www.wintonsworld.com/cars/carnews/carnewstext/fuel-economy.html

Advertised mpg Test mpg %shortfall
Mercedes A140 Elegance 39.8 27.8 11.6

MB actually was actually the most accurate on the test!!

Advertised mpg Test mpg %shortfall
Renault Clio 1.5dCi 65.7 45.5 30.7

This tallies as I've generally got pretty close to the advertised figures on my mercs but it does show that if you're getting 31, assuming you're not cruising at 60 on the motorway all day, it's probably not far out. As has been mentioned, the lower powered cars are often worse on fuel economy than the bigger ones as they're underpowered and have to work harder - hence my E240 was no more economical than an E320 and A210AMG's A210 is actually better as it rarely has to do more than idle.

My wifes SLK 230k and A160 both take about the same amount on a fill up and both do the same mileage to a fill up. I serviced the A class a few weeks ago and changing nthe air filter made the biggest difference to MPG and performance.
wehn we first got the A class I thought it very slow for a 1.6 after a hard thrashing and a service it seems to be quite nippy.

If you get the same consumption both urban and motorway cruising, then she needs a good thrash (after servicing and not from cold of course) pleanty of rev's get her good and hot, oh and dose the fuel tank with an injector additive first. The injectors are gummed and the valve seat's are rusty through lack od use while sat on a dealers lot?
