A class gear selection trouble

Hi all, i have a 2000 a170 diesal, its the manual without a clutch
(not sure what thats called)
when the engine is running i can select all gears without a problem but
when i drive the car it gets stuck in gear. i now have to pull away in second then go straight to fourth and even then i have to whack the gear stick to get it into neutral sometimes.
any ideas of what could be wrong ?
the car drives fine when its in gear and there are no unusual noises.

Cant remember if yours has the small link rod still on top of the selector on top of the box, if so it might have come off, only other thing i can think of is the gear selector needs re-teaching in due to the cables slowly stretching.......

Thanks for the reply, im not sure about the rod on top of the box, is it a major job to adjust the cables if it needs doing ?
do you think the actual gearbox should be ok and its more to do with the selector box or cables ?

Rod on top of the box is about £6-8 from merc and pops on, takes 30 seconds, to reset the cables you need the car on star and follow a teach-in process.........
