Hi Guys and Gals

Can anybody give me chapter and verse on a problem we are having on my wifes 2005 A180 CDI.

I have just booked the car in for it's B service at my local MB stealer in Colindale NW London. The car has only done 12,500 miles but we have had a persistent problem with the rear brakes in that they "groan" everytime you get out of the car.
When I asked a customer service bod to check this out about 6 months ago I was told "Oh they all do that Sir"
I think that the stealer thinks that I will take that at face value. WRONG!

So here I am, asking you the question.

Thanx.

As the car has done relatively few miles for the year I wonder how rusty the hand brake is? I don't know if the A class has the handbrake shoes inside the disc as per the others in the range but if it has it could be quite rusty in there which maybe causing the noise when the suspension rises slightly as you get out of the car.
Does it still make the noise with the handbrake off?

Could it be the rear shock absorbers or springs ?

I think the A180 cdi has discs all round

The car may have discs all round but the handbrake is still shoes inside the hub part of the disc

Hi
If it's rust on the handbrake shoe, if it cleaned will that solve the problem? And if so why was I told that they all do that.

Please don't take this as a sexist remark, women quite often do not apply the handbrake as hard as they might, when it's applied theres the weight of the driver and any passengers on the suspension when said occupant(s) alight from the vehicle the suspension unloads and in so doing tries to turn the wheels against the handbrake which if not applied firmly may lead to said groaning noise. You could try cleaning out any dust from the H/brake but I think you'll find if the brake is applied a little firmer the noise will not be evident, however don't get into marital dispute over this ;)

A lot of these do make a noise when getting in & out, it will be the handbrake. Try it with the handbrake off. If it's an auto, just leave it in park. It will not be groaning when you're going along, don't worry about it.

Thanks Guys

I really appreciate your input. I'll try to be fairer to the dealer when I take the car in for it's service, until of coarse I get presented with the bill.

groaning

quite interesting thread,at first I would have thought its a dry shock rubber .But Ultymate has a good point, about applying the handbrake on more firmly,if its not in the brake.and it groans all the time. One old trick is to put a hosepipe under the rear wheel arch soak all suspension and see if the noise stops.

Latest update: Stealer didn't want to look at problem during service, but wanted to charge £280 to clean handbrake drum on a seperate occasion. Also charged £2.80 + Vat for concentrated wash fluid in windscreen reservoir that was totaly FULL. I know this because I had topped it up the day before.

How much are we charged for items and work that are NOT supplied or done?

I think I can help here with your problem.

Yes many MB's suffer with the noise you are hearing. The cure is dead simple.

Remove the disc and put some heat resistant grease on the edges of the parking brake shoe that touch the backplate.

This should cure the problem.

I have a brand new A150 it also groans when the handbrake is on. Took it to the dealer last week they said they had stripped it down and lubricated the handbrake and this had fixed the fault. But still have the same problem going back to the dealer this week for another go at fixing the problem.
