My neighbour's A Class just developed this fault. The keyfob doesn't open the central locking so had to open it manually with the key, but on doing this the alarm sounds. The car will also start OK as well (with the alarm sounding).
Don't suspect the vacuum system since the alarm is not being switched off and the internal door switch works OK. Also puzzled as the car starts so I'd think a *bit* of the key's electronics is working as I thought the key 'talks' to the immobiliser once inserted in the igniton switch.
Have tried new batteries in the keyfob, no difference. Only have the 1 remote keyfob as the other key is just a mechanical one.
It's a 2000 A170Cdi.
Any suggestions?
