Hi all,

I am looking at an A class (X plate) with a semi auto box and over 60k on the clock. Are these as bad as the forums make out? Would I be better off burning a stack of cash? I see lots of hysteria on the auto boxes but is this real or just internet hyps?

Regards,

A

A Class W168 Pre Face Lift Auto

I can only comment on our car, a 2001 A160 Auto. I hope I am not going to jinx it, but with 70k on the clock it runs and operates without fault. Changed the auto transmission fluid at 60k to a non-genuine synthetic trans oil, plus new filter, it seems to have made the trans smoother. I do believe from friends in the second hand car market that the semi-autos can have problems, but from another forum that specialises in A series cars this is only due to a cheap plastic clip easily replaced. Maybe someone else will shed light on this? Ken

They do go wrong. Not much but they do.

Expect a big bill if a clutch is needed or the control unit.

Avoid like the plague, infact I would go sofar as to say I wouldn't recommend any semi-auto no matter who made it.They do go wrong and cost a forutune to put right.

You also have to bear in mind that unlike a normal auto they do not have constant motion meaning any stops on hills or even slight inclines become a nightmare and involve full on handbrake usage(just like when you took driving lessons).

If you don't want to use your left foot then get a normnal auto,if you don't mind using your left foot get a manual but don't buy a semi-auto :)

Yes, avoid - sorry to burst your bubble! the ACS system isnt reliable and breaks down reliably!!! unit is in the NSF inner wing area and controls the clutch biting point and gearchange. Expensive... Once again sorry..
