Hi

Has anyone experienced this, mine went last week! Does the timing chain drive any other components apart from the cam shaft? Cars only done 57k regularly serviced.

Any comments appreciated :(

When a chain or belt snaps, one or more of the inlet and exhaust valves will be open, or partly open, the damage is done by the piston coming up and hitting the valve. the ammount of damage is dependent on the speed of the car, auto or manual, with luck, the piston can come up and just bend the valve, with a little less luck it can hole the piston. Only by removing the head can the damage be seen.

You say the car is regularly serviced, does it have a MB service history as the chain should not have snapped at this mileage and the fact it has shows a manufacturing defect ,I would be looking for some help from MB here.
Speak to your main dealer.

Agreed - I'd be expecting a substantial contribution (if not all) from MB. Chains should be good for 200k. If it has FMBSH (proper oil changes) it must be a manufacturing fault.

Just had a look and I see it it a double (Duplex) chain, something must have seezed or broke to snap that.

Thanks for your comments, just written to main dealer and MB. I think as far as I can work out /been told the second chain may drive the oil pump, but that comes off the crank. The only thing that could have seized would be the cam, but I can rock that a few degrees either way, so thats not seized, unless its very tight, but didnt feel that way.

Thanks again.

Yes there is a short chain that drives the oil pump from the crank, does the engine turn over at all, or is it jammed somewhere.

engine turns over very fast but seems to be free. we are waiting from contact from mercedes as to whether they will contribute towards costs. paying main dealer servicing prices you expect an engine to last and at 57k most cambelts will last longer than this!
its shocking
