1999 c220 cdi classic
hi,
Ive just bought a 1999 mercedes c220 cdi classic, i want to insure it next month when i get my 2nd no claims bonus in.
ive been driving a micra for 2 years, i decided that at the age of 38 i better learn to drive a car ( before that i've been riding motorbikes for 20 years)
Anyhow i,m now 40 and i wanted a luxury car so i bought the c220 ( i would love to get the s500 eventually, a beautiful car).
The problem were these, when i got insurance for my micra i was still treated like a teenager, it didnt matter that i rode a powerful bike for 20 years, that i got 9 ncb on it nor that i was 38 years old so i ended up paying £840 for a £900 starter car which was a micra.
Are there any companies who you can recommend, or anything i can add that will make the cost cheaper for me. so far on gocompare site i'm getting daft quotes over £1200.
Also is a tracker value for money and worth getting?
and finally would this car be classed as a modern classic?
thanks for all suggestions

Hello and welcome......not a modern classic and tracker not worth it on a 1999 car.

Try insurance brokers......the comparison sites are not necessarily best value. Play with named drivers and excesses.

Not sure about brokers based on my recent experience, but worth a try. Adding one or two named drivers with a longer driving record (so long as they haven't had an accident) should definitely bring it down a little. Insurance - it's a mad world out there.......

what i,m going to do is get a family member on my policy whos over 40 rather than a family friend whos only 29as ive heard over 40s are better for lowering insurance that a young driver
the c220 i have is worth £900 as it needs restoring which i will start doing in 2 weeks, ive had insurance quotes as high as £3000 which is stupid. is there anything else i can do to get my insurance down?

If you put your voluntary excess up this sometimes lowers it a bit, fully comp nearly always works out cheaper than TPFT, as above a tracker will not help much, might be worth phoning a few brokers, i don't think it 's a classic until its 20 years old.

I've said this before, but the money you are paying isn't based on the value of your car it's the payouts made for damage to other cars (and the people in them) from people with your driving experience. One third party claim could easily come to 3 grand.

I had similar opinions to you when I was in the States, paying $100 a month for insurance on a cheapo Nissan. Had a minor coming together at traffic lights and was sued for $1.3 million in damages  - it settled for far, far less but changed my opinion of insurance premiums considerably!

I have put my wife on insurance policy's before, even with a provisional driving licence(believe it or not) brought the policy on an Audi A4 2.4 down by over £100 - insurance companies are strange!

Also, before my wife got her provisional, I put my mother on car insurance as well as me and that brought the price down too.

Go to one of the comparison sites and change your occupation to different things(that are suitable). There are so many and they are so vague but the price can vary massively

If you want to ensure you have every insurance quote you can possibly get - go to the comparison sites - they are all slightly different

GoCompare, Moneysupermarket, TescoCompare, Confused.com

and

Aviva and Direct Line directly because they are not on them

If you do all of the above, you have covered all your bases
