New to this forum, been quietly reading for a few weeks now. First Merc for me, a E270 CDI estate. Very nice car and great to drive, i do 45k (ish) a year and fancied some luxury (must be getting old! :D )

Previous cars have all been Passats with Westfield "7 replicas" for fun/ weekend use. Hoping to do plenty of the maintenance myself, been reading the SBC dangers at pad change time! It seems these cars are tricky to work on

Had a quick look/ clean of the MAF, looked in good condition and cleaning made no real improvement in MPG. Only concern i had was the turbo shaft seemed to have more play to it than i expected?

First attempt at pictures :D

This seemed reasonably contaminated with oil, not seemingly from the turbo, from the recirc pipe from this device....

What is it exactly? Some sort of recirc? Not too worried about it having oil in it, cleaned it all now. What are peoples thoughts on this?

Kept the turbo covered and wiped what oil was present away carefully. Movement on the shaft (sideways) was approx 1/4". The impeller seemed ok and was not damaged.

Anyones thoughts and opinions on this and anything else is appreciated. I am hoping to do plenty of DIY maintenance/ repairs where possible. Expecting the car to do a minimum of 300k and hopefully 400k.

Thanks for reading this dribble :p

Sorry to disappoint but I have no experience of turbo diesels, just the 230K kompressor petrol engine.

I hope one of our diesel gurus will jump in and help you.

Not sure but this looks like an Emulsifier usually fitted to Lorries etc ,did one once and it had turned to solid rubber inside !. MB will have a different name no doubt ,as for the
1/4" movement in turbo this should be rattling its brains out with that play in shaft ,but hey if it ain't broke etc etc . Paul.

Can I see a wider picture please.

The cars back together and done 2-3k since the picture, what was you thinking? Do you want a wider pic with everything back in place?

Are any of the info DVD's on ebay worth buying? What about ECU readers for £60, any good? Can you run codes with them or cycle valves etc etc? Had VAG COM on previous Passat and it was great! Probably needs a seperate post for this bit.

Thanks for the replies, it was just me messing and finding my way round the engine, no problems on car. MPG is averaging around 44 on display and 42 on proper measures :) Not bad for a E270. Service B due though so i better have a look in the piggy bank :)

The car pulls fine and the turbo seems to work good, just seemed too much play for my liking. A friend advised me that some newer types of turbo have a differant bearing and there is some play until oil pressure etc builds up?

If it breaks it'll be something to fix! The tools are ready :)
