Hi,
Welcome to the fold.

20 years makes it a W123 by my reconing (1985 - B reg). I don't remember the smaller square N/S mirror until the W124 so it does sound odd. However, you say E280. The format of putting the E before the numbers started around 10 years ago - 20 years would make it a 280E (where E used to stand for fuel injection whereas from around '95 it meant E class as they were all injection anyway) - subtle but important difference as the E280 (W124) of 10 years ago would have the square mirror.

Clarify or post us a pic to be sure.

The tyre pressures are listed on a plate on the inside of the fuel filler cap.

hi filled it up with fuel today so i found the tyre pressures then had to redo them as i blew the tyres up before i filled up

I cannot post pictures as i donot have access to a camera at the moment.

On the boot it says E-280 and the first mot certificate was isued on feb 19th 1990 and it states the year of manufacture was 1986 (on the mot cert) but on the first mot certs says thr registration was transfered fron a C reg to a cherished plate so im assuming it was first registered in 1987.
It has all the mot certs but this is were it gets really strange. One of the test certs says it runs out july 9th 1997 but the next one starts April 3rd 1997.

Just an idea but perhaps it was involved in some form of accident. The damage was then repaired with perhaps a boot from a original E-280 with a wing mirror coming off the same car which would confuse me into thinking it was a E-280 and not a 280-E

just to clarify things further im assuming the W123/W124 are some form of build/chassy number.

Please bear in mind that im new to MB ownership and at the moment very confused

Regarding MOT's.

There is nothing wrong in obtaining a new MOT three months or so before the old has ran out. Most people for instance when selling a car would prefer it to have a full MOT, perhaps a reason your car had an MOT running to July but a new one starting in April of the same year. In this case a garage can issue an MOT for thirteen months instead of twelve as the existing MOT has more than a month still to run.

Good luck with the car, you've chosen the better years for build quality etc.

Last, what a cynical man you are, suggesting that a Russian website may not be secure :)

Far more secure would be to go to your friendly MB dealership, take your V5 with the VIN and make friends with the parts department. My experience is that they will be only too keen to help a "real" owner / driver rather than the pratts that sadly they spend their working day with.

If you fall lucky you will get an older member of staff that remembers your model new and will know all the potential faults, you should never underestimate the knowledgebase of parts staff, they may never actually fit the parts but they know which bits fail and why, cos they keep selling the broken bits! You even find that they will get fitting advise from the workshop staff for you, they always have a tame friend that they can ask.

Good luck with the new car.

Mark.

That Russian site is an MB forum/Club in Russia. As regards it being secure; I'm not sure what you mean. They have all the info on their database, and they are telling you the details of your car, based on your VIN. You give them no other details, except for your VIN #.

Just had a go myself. Sadly I didn't discover a anything new about it.

Given that all you are entering is one piece of information (VIN number) I can't see any problem with the site; apparently the vehicle spec against the VIN number is already in the public domain.

Well appartently there's a clone of mine!

But, no but seriously folkes.

The fact that the VIN numbers relate to the actual spec of the car, and the fact that if you type in your VIN number and it gives you the spec of your car suggests that either (1) VIN numbers are published by MB somewhere complete with spec or (2) Some Ruskie has broken in to MB and copied their records. Either way by logging in and checking your own VIN number you are not increasing the likelihood of anyone cloning your car as you are not generating any new information or creating new links between bits of existing information.

Frankly, if you were some doodgy geezer cloning cars I'm not sure how important the factory spec for any particular VIN number would be. Colour and registration number is what you'd be interested in. If you then wander up to your car of choice (noting colour and registration) you can then get the VIN number (should you care) by looking through the windscreen.

didn't the head of MB germany

have his super-duper, all the bells and whistles S class stolen recently. If they can boost his armour-plated monster, I'm sure they won't need my Vins from the MB club of Russia. Anyway the list doesn't seem right on my SL, as it states yellow fog lamps. As if I would have anything remotely french-looking on a german car.
