Thanks Simon, I appreciate that. I think you are probably right that it's not up to date...

On a similar subject, I also can't get it to read the brand of DVD-R I am using (Memorex). It reads my Tesco CDRs though. Anyone know what brand definitely is compatible?

The DVD-R that I just happened to have "in stock" are Verbatim..
Thats what I used for burning the DVD full of MP3 tracks....
Keiron..Fancy a phone chat ??
See your PM

Ooops I see I cant PM you for some reason...
I was going to give you my number.

There is a chance that it doesnt like how your burned your dvd..
Which program did you use?
I used Nero 9 and if I remember correctly I used the "MP3 Jukebox disc" creator...
I may have to try another just to be sure....

Thanks Simon. I used Windows own DVD burning software (which to be honest I did rather struggle with!). I'll try and find something else before moving on to different brands of disc...although wouldn't be necessary if I could get the SD cards to work of course!

Keiron,
Here are some photos of my Comand unit in Engineering mode...
Its advised to look but not alter anything when in this mode..There are some menus that have tick boxes with both ticked and unticked boxes..
Leave them alone !!!

1st set of pictures is where to look.

Go in to engineering menu. Then go to 'Menu' > 'SWDL'. It will have a HW/SW number. The 3rd and 4th set of digits are the firmware version.

HW/SW 09/34/09/29/00

Latest firmware is: 01/2010 09.29

UPDATE !!!

UPDATE !!
Hi Keiron,
Just talked to Comand online and it seems that the easiest way to tell if you have the latest firmware is to look in your route options.. Has yours the option of "Economy route"???
If not then you have NOT got the latest firmware..
If you have Economy route then you do indeed have the latest frimware

I am sure this will be a big help in answering your question.

Thanks Simon.

I have just compared your images to the shots I took on my phone. In almost every case, I have a lower number than you do which suggests I am most certainly NOT up to date despite what the dealer said.

So I suppose I need to go back to them. What exactly am I asking for? Just to update comand to the latest firmware version? (What is the latest version called?)

Is this a big job, or do they just pop a disc in? Is it something that can be done in 5 minutes?

I will need to pop out to the car at lunch time to check whether I have the "economy route" option - I doubt it though!

Keiron,
See npuk's post 26 above..
The firmware version is in the 1st set of photos..(I have just deleted the 2nd set as they are not relevant)..

An easy way to tell if you have the latest firmware is to plan a route and look in options under Route / Alternative / .. If you have the latest firmware then you will have "Dynamic / Fast / Economical / Short

See photos below:

If you dont have the Economy route option then you HAVE NOT got the latest firmware.

An MB dealership can do the firmware upgrade as can Comand online.. As far as I know its a short enough procedure for you to wait for it.
Check out your car first and let us know your findings..

It will give "fastest route", Shortest route AND "Economy Route"...

Thanks Simon :D I was going to have a quiet day, but you have me thinking now on my NGT3 and if I have the latest software, is it not the case that you just get the CD and pop it in and it sorts itself out.

I have not been so bold as you in looking around it all yet ;)

Hello Malcolm and Good Morning..

On a NTG 2.5 they are Hard drive based and so they dont use a DVD for the map..

A Map upgrade is supplied on 2 DVD discs.. It takes about 1.5 hours to update.. I went for a drive whilst mine was doing its thing to allow it to do it in one go uninterrupted !!

The firmware upgrade is a different thing.. That involves STAR and cannot be done DIY

You have to buy map updates, these you can install yourself.

Firmware upates are supplied to main dealer and indies with genuine STAR systems direct by MB Germany and for the latest HDD based system require an online connection to MB Germany to update the system.

So the comand firmware and the map software are different things and not linked?

What is the latest map version, and how is that found in the menu?

That is correct, with the firmware you can change and update how and what is displayed so that additions on the new mapping can be used in some cases

Yes the two are seperate.
I got my map update via npuk and then sold it on via eBay.
Sorry but I can't remember how to tell what map version you have.
There is something in the back of my mind that says you need the latest firmware for the latest map to be recognised.
