Hi ladies & Gents
Im new at this but i wonder if someone could help me my wife has a 51reg CLK 200 kompressor and at the begining of last week the bas/esp light came on and the car lost power and once you switch it off and restart it it goes out and its fine but its happenend a few times since so after getting the garage to check it ive been advised its the timimg soleniod leaking into the wiring loom and triggering sensors, this is apparently a common fault and is at a cost of £800 and being new to Mercs i wondered if this is the case or im being ripped off

Thanks in advance

A classic problem on most Mercs in the last 8-10 year models is the brake light switch which causes similar symptoms - ESP/BAS warning light coming on which disappears after you turn ignitionon and off, the Cruise control also disables. The switch is prone to failure but is cheap (about £10) and a reasonable DIY project (about 15 mins to fit). Before coughing up £800, check this out first. I have had two fail on my last two cars.

How accurately have you described their diagnosis?
The description has some elements of reality in it but the words don't ring right. It could be right or it could be a made up description.

The brake light switch does put the warning lights on, but it doesn't reduce engine power.

The gearbox can leak oil into the wiring which can contaminate the ECU - then all bets are off. This is the closest to the description I can come to. I thought this primarily affected S class models though. £800 would be on the cheap side for this issue.

I have no idea what a timing soleniod is though. There is a crank position sensor for engine timing but as for the gearbox I don't know.

Well im not to mechanically minded but its located at the front of the rocker cover under a plastic cover and apparently that is leaking and the oil is travelling through that wire connection and into the engines wiring loom and its such a common fault MB have uprated the wiring plug so oil cant possibly travel into the loom and i just wondered if anyone at heard of this such a common fault

thanks
