Hi,

I've just got round to ordering a new remote keyfob for my w124 coupe (car only came with one) and MB Hertford say it will be £140+ VAT!! :(

Before I spend this money could anyone answer this question that MB seem unable to answer (they simply stated i should have not only a spare but 3 other different types of key, all expensive):

1) If I lose/break my only remote keyfob (its the IR system with the red/green LEDs on the doorhandle) could I then:

Simply order a spare remote key fob from MB with all the paperwork, details, etc. (and so no point in getting a spare now); OR

Will MB not be able to make a remote key fob without the original, thus requiring huge expense (new ECU possibly?) to get the car deimmobilised?

2) Also does anyone know a different garage (perhaps an immobiliser or lock specialist?) who could do a spare remote key fob for a lot less?

Thanks,

Ben

Hi Ben,, the key is coded to the chassis, so no need to order now, but if it fails you cannot use the car until the new one comes.

It cant be bought elsewhere

Thanks malcolm,

Does that extend to the physical ignition key being logged to the chassis number too? I got the feeling MB knew the answer but would not tell me as they guessed I wouldn't fork out for the key if they told me this. So much for improving customer service...

Before you order the new remote see if they can check how many remotes have already been coded to the car.

I lost one and paid £160 for a replacement. Then I was told that I needed to change something else (cost £500) as the car had reached the maximum (8) number of coded remotes.

Any chance of a picture of the key

Its like this one, the key flicks out. I only ask as I've had a spare cut and this works in the boot/door locks but wont turn in the ignition barrel - only the original one works in the ignition barrel.

Thanks,

Ben

You can buy the blades from Ebay and have them cut. or from MB there is a good article on fixing those key fobs in the How to section by Anyweb The blade from MB is £49

I think I'll get a blade off ebay and have it cut as thats likely to be cheap and save ordering a full replacement untill/if this one breaks and then hope the maximum number of remotes havent been ordered already

Thanks once again for saving me over £160!

Ben
