First time to this site and I must admit, first time to own a Merc. Bought recently on very a limited budget, I am now the proud owner of a red 190E, 2.0L Auto, registered 1988 with very dubious spoiler on the boot. Displayed mileage is 89047, but since the mileometer don't work (last MOT cert' showed this was the recorded mileage) that is just one of the issues I need to address (any tips to get it going again v/welcome indeed). Of immediate concern is the engine. Hence the subject title. When the engine revs beyond 2500rpm, the noise is unbelievable and the rattles all appear to be top end- tappety might be the word to describe it. No smoke, blue or white, or residues of any sort are around the the exhaust pipe and I must admit, it feels rather sluggish and certainly juicy. I'll be undertaking all the work myself, so would value any advice in helping me identifying the problem before laying out any of my limited funds. Thanks in advance for any help in this matter

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Leave the odometer it ain't important at this stage.

Your engine on the other hand hand sounds like a sick puppy.

It might help to get an MB specialist to look at it, it could be camshaft or hydraulic valve lash adjusters (I forget the proper name). Best to spend money on identifying the true cause and then spend time and money fixing it rather than wasting effort and money chasing it down by elimination.

Both these jobs are DIYable and there is lots of info on the various forums and I assume you have a Haynes manual.

What part of the country are you in.

Hope this helps

The most important thing to check initially is the timing chain. If yours is the double chain model it is less likely to be worn, however the tensioner has a habit of siezing.

Check it before the chain jumps and bends your valves.

Does it have any oil in it?!!!

Not asuming you're daft but...check the level and of course the pressure (guage inside, right hand side of furthest left instrument circle) It will most likely read around 1 - 3 bar (ish) at idle and should be pegged at 3 at anything above ~1000 rpm.
