A Simple Question......

Right, a simple question to you all;

2 Weeks ago I went to work, 5 mile drive at 7am, car started fine on first turn. Car parked outside for 8 hours. Went to start to go home, kicked over, almost started, then died, would not start and had to have it put on back of truck to take it home. Tried to start it Saturday morning, no go. Battery almost flat, so gave up after 4or5 tries, didn't fire at all.

Tried again on Sunday evening, and low and behold, started fine. (by the way didn't charge battery).

WHY< WHY< WHY?????? or HOW even???

Since then it has started everytime since (touch wood). The only difference in my mode is that now I DONT TOUCH EXCELERATOR when starting, before I used to press the excelerator when starting and occasionally it wouldn't start but after 4 or 5 hours it would start.

Any ideas from anyone, or any tips. I have been told that the fuel & engine ecu's are a bit duff, can this be? I did have the high pressure system turned down because it wasn't turning off when warm, black fuel smoke pouring out of exhaust. Not doing that anymore, quite economical now actually.

So come on Guy's and Gal's, any points of view? Has anyone had the same problem, and solved the issue?

Thanking you in advance.

Bill.

watching the laptop connected to my car (engine off) - when not touching the throttle - its 15% open, touching the throttle opens it to 25%, and full throttle opens it to 33%

so - its designed to start and run without touching throttle - the manual states that if it wont start with 0 throttle, try pressing throttle gently - not the other way around (which is a hang back to carb days....)

Thank-you for that, I will admit that it became a habit because of carbs.

Thanks again.

p.s. So I'm most probably flooding it.

You don't say what model you have, but the same symptoms were caused by a faulty fuel pump on my 2000 C180- quite common according to dealer. If I remember correctly it was to do with over-pressure relief valve staying open.
Hope this helps.

Even though you don't state which of your cars had this problem, pretty sure all of them (fuel injected) have the same starting proceedure. FOOT OFF Accelerator.

The only time I ever had to press the pedal in a MB was after running out of petrol (happened twice with me). My proceedure for this was, foot to floor, crank engine, and when engine starts to fire, pump the pedal 'till running smoothly.

Other than that, foot on the matt.

Maybe something different, but unless it happens again, and without foot on accelerator, wouldn't worry too much.

PS: Is it still taking 4 to 5 turns as it used to. (shouldn't)

I agree with the no acc. rule, carbs used to need priming inj systems run rich immediatly. The only thing I would add is to check your air filter, if the filter is at the end of its life it will restrict the air flow and make the mixture even richer, add that to pumping the acc. and you could be flooding the engine very easily.

Thank-You......

Thank you one and all, sorry for the delay.

It's the 560sel that I was relating to.

Well, (touch wood) it has still been starting Ok, first turn. I will add that this car has never stalled, well not with me anyway, thank goodness!!!!

It's just a shame I just don't trust the old beauty anymore. I even leave the engine running while fueling-up (I know, I know).

Anyway thanks for all your replies, it is very much appreciated.

I will let you know what happens, if and when it does.

Cheers all, have a great weekend.

Ciao, Bill.
