A140 starting issues

Hi, I've just joined the forum today, so firstly please accept my apologies if someone has answered a similar query before.

I have an A140, 2002 plate which intermittently doesn't start - when inserting the key into the ignition the dashboard lights do not come on. If I turn the ignition off and on numerous times, then the car may have ignition and start. Once started, the car runs without any problems.

Can anyone suggest what this may be due to, and potential repair costs.

There is an electronic loop ring around the ignition bezel I believe possibly it's not recognising the key until u fumble around for a while
