hydraulic unit

ok thanks,
could you tell me where the hydraulic unit is please.
the reason i ask is my bas/esp light came on and then my abs unit when i touched the brake.
merc garage said it was the control unit costing £2500. but i dont trust them as they diagnosed it when i broke down and it got taken to the garage. and they may just be wanting to sell me a new car.
i was hopeing it may just be a simple switch or sensor i can change myself.
its a 1999 pertol auto

where are you located dustcap? it sounds like you need a second opinion.

colin is talking about the gearbox hydraulic unit btw, what exactly did your garage describe as needing replacement? £2500 is ott for the esp unit, which is built in to the brake hydraulic pump and valve body, located under the bonnet with several metal pipes attatched.

hi

in near alnwick, northumberland.
im all spent up to take it to any dealers, if i dont fix it ill just have to sell it to try and get my money back.

the esp/bas light is on, and its stuck in limp mode, max speed 30mph. also, when i touch the brake after disconnecting the main engine ecu, the abs light comes on.

any ideas?

we will try to help dustcap, but tell us the full story. you say you 'broke down', do you just mean that the warning lights came on, or that the engine would not start, or what? can you give us a full account of all your symptoms from the start. also, how long did this mercedes main dealer take to diagnose the fault? how much did they charge to diagnose? exactly what procedure of work did they quote for (that would cost £2500).

i am slightly confused as to why you want to know where the unit is. how will this help you?

there IS a simple switch that could cause this, it is called a brake pedal switch, costs about £15 and is very easy to replace. if however you have had a correct diagnosis i suggest you have much bigger problems.

hi

im not familiar with mercedes.
where will i find the engine type?
all i know its a pertol automatic something like a 1400cc i think
sorry im not being very helpful.

after being recovered by mercedes dealer, they told me the repair would be about £2600.
unfortunately i never thought about asking for the codes.

the bas/esp light is on, and it is stuck in limp home mode.

i phoned ecu testing and they said it is unlikely the abs control unit at fault.

should i trust the dealer? as this car only has 65k miles are they just saying its an expensive fix to sell me another car?

c'mon dustcap. did it fail to start, fail to move, or just warning lights and limp home are your problem?!?!? always trust the dealers as far as you can spit them.

The car number is on the V5 and it could start of with WDB168

With this info I can also give you a lot more info on this fault

Where are you in the UK

hi. thanks for your replies

hi, been away for a bit,
thanks everybody for getting back to me.
the chassis number is; wdb16803...etc

the engine runs fine, no engine management light, just bas/esp and abs lights on dash, also it must be in limp home mode as i try to drive it flat out and a pedal cyclist overtook me speed lol.

OK your car is a 168031 that is an A140

Now the reason it is in the get you home mode is because a speed signal is missing somewhere so the car does not know what to do,,so it locks up to let the bicycles go past safely :D

It could be the brake switch built into the servo.

It could be the ESP module

Testing on STAR would say what one it was

hi television,

there are two switches on the servo, one is a longish barrel shape, the other is smaller.

i took the abs unit to bits, it has esp stamped on, thinking it just needed soldering up, but when i got it to bit, no circuit board, just the coils which operate the small pistons on the abs unit.

The ESP fault will turn off the ABS so you have to get things the right way round,,the first thing that i put up will do that
