I'm narrowing down my short-list of cars to look at over the next week at MB dealers and have a 150 Classic SE, 180 Elegance SE and 180 Avantgarde SE. According to my figures it would probably be better to plump for the A150 as the lesser mpg figures are offset by the higher purchase cost of a diesel and increased diesel costs at the pumps. BUT, if the manufacturer mpg figures are wildly inaccurate I may be better off paying the higher initial costs for a diesel.

If any A150 automatic drivers could share their real-life fuel figures I'd be very interested to read them.

Many thanks.

Hi, we had an 06 A150 Avantgarde sport Auto with 18" AMG's!! :D
It used to do about 37mpg on a run up the motorway, but normal commuting it was about 30mpg....not that good! :-x
It wanted a B-service at 5000 miles!! not that good!
They lent me a 07 A160 diesel for a day with 2000 on the clock...what a pile!! very rattly, stinky and smelly!:-x
just done a 300 mile trip in our CLK320 convertible....32mpg...Very good;)

Get the bigger engine!! You will love it!! We replaced ours with a A200 Avantgarde....It was like a go-cart and was better on fuel than the A150.
Swapped it now for CLK320 convertible!!..lots of fun!!! or it will be if the rain hold's off!!

Hope this of some help, John.:D

Thanks very much, John, that is of great interest and confirms what a number of folk have said in reviews I have found on the internet.

I shall listen out for rattles on my forthcoming test drives!

Thanks, again.

You will find the MB website figures for combined fuel economy useful as a means of showing relative levels of economy.

My brother has an A160cdi Classic SE manual and loves it. And he gets over 60 mpg on a long run. In fact, on the 600 mile round trip he does quite often to the Wirrell form Bournemouth he has several times averaged 65 mpg tested tankful to tankful. You won't get near that economy with a petrol engine.

I have the A180cdi Elegance automatic and my wife has the Avantgarde version also automatic. We get over 50 mpg on a run, no problem. The engine is quiet, smooth and refined at cruising speeds and pulls an amazing 40 miles per thousand revs so that at 80mph it is only doing 2,000 revs. Very relaxing and loads of low down power. Very good reviews of the 180 diesels.
