A160 ECU fault

My wife owns an A160 elegance semi automatic. A fault began when she put into first gear and holding foot on brake car wanted to move forwards and sometimes began to stall. (Slight smell of fuel and ABS light now on also)
A mobile mechanic came to look at the car and plugged in diagnostic equip, he stated that it was a fault with ECU and the ABS unit. He states this will cost approx 1500 pounds.
My question is, if the ECU can be repaired is it reliable? and will the ABS unit have to be replaced or is it connected to the ECU unit.

I dont believe the 1500 bit.

Year 1998, gearbox oil not sure but serviced within last 3000 miles. 1500 was the guestimate of the mechanic he can remove them but states Mercedes have to code them to the car. As you have guessed by now I am not a mechanic but am interested in a repair if possible.
What is significance of gearbox oil?
Any help appreciated.
