Hi Guys,
Following a new noise that developed last night on the rear of the wife's A160, I investigated today to find that the rear spring has snapped near the bottom and the rubber mount had bounced out.

It looks like a replacement spring and rubber "top hat" mount are needed, but does nayne have any idea of cost?

Also, how tricky would this be to attempt at home? (Not a novice, just dont want to get into a point of no return situation !). It looks like a really simple job, but I would love a little bit of guidance.

Your input is very much appreciated.
Very best regards,
Russ

rear coil spring

hi
the same thing has happened to my wifes c180
got a new spring £35 inc vat from mercedes dealer
i dont know if the rear is the same on your car as it is on mine
but i have just successfully fitted a spring today my self and it was easy to my surprise.
this is wat i did (spring compressor did not work as the one i had did not have any clearence i think you need one that goes through the middle of spring)
supported the car on jacking point removed the plastic cover from bottom of spring removed bolt for damper. ( i dont know what its called but the bit where the spring and damper sit has a bolt near the wheel and one the otherside of spring loosen these . take the weight of this assembly with a trolly jack remove bolt nearest wheel slowly lower jack and it came out easy.
put new spring in slowly jack up when you can put damper in and bolt up
slowly jack up until bolt holes align and put the bolt to the bottom assembly back.it really was easy and mercedes wanted £ 150+vat to fit this

hope this helps

Thanks for the reply Mark.
We have actually arranged for a local Garage to replace both rear springs as I have just done my back in so wont be attempting it on my own!

It has worked out at about £120 for both inclusive, which isnt too bad without getting my own hands dirty.

Hello there,

Glad you got that spring sorted out, the same thing happened with my 2000 A 160 Avantgarde I noticed something wasn't quite right when reversing to the right or going round a left and bend - it felt as thought the front right wheel wasn't in line with the rest of the wheels almost as if it was going under the car!!

My mechanic was horrified when I booked it in just before it's service - the front right spring had snapped clean in half and it could have been a different story he had seen the same thing a couple of times before on A class's.

He charged for the part only as the service was round the corner! MB dealership quoted £250 and said it was probably caused by my driving!!!:)

Same here!

Hi,

Just read your post and thought I'd mention the same thing happened on my A190.

The spring on the left rear broke off at the bottom along with the mount.

That was just one of several things that failed on the rear suspension setup of my Aclass in the few years I owned it. I lost count of the various bits I had replaced.

My local independent garage that always fixed it for me had one other customer with an Aclass that had suffered the rear suspension collapsing while on the motorway - very scary!!!
